St. Louis Blues Win Stanley Cup, Defeat Boston Bruins
Blues' Third Stanley Cup Championship
Binnington, O'Reilly Lead Blues to Victory
The St. Louis Blues have won the Stanley Cup, defeating the Boston Bruins 4-1 in Game 7 on Wednesday night at TD Garden.
Ryan O'Reilly scored for the fourth straight game, and rookie Jordan Binnington stopped 32 shots for the Blues. St. Louis won its first Stanley Cup since 1967 and its third overall.
The Blues rode hot goaltending from Binnington and some opportunistic offense to win the series. Binnington, who was making his first start in the Stanley Cup Final, was outstanding throughout the series, posting a 2.11 goals-against average and a .936 save percentage.
The Bruins, who were looking to win their seventh Stanley Cup, were led by David Pastrnak, who had four goals and seven assists in the series. But it wasn't enough to overcome the Blues' strong defense and opportunistic offense.
The Blues' victory is a major upset, as the Bruins were heavily favored to win the series. But St. Louis proved to be the better team, playing with heart and determination throughout the playoffs.
The Blues' victory is a great story for the city of St. Louis, which has been without a major professional sports championship since the Cardinals won the World Series in 2011.
