Russian Tennis Star Andrey Rublev Admits Tanking Set at French Open
Rublev Suffers Straight-Set Defeat to Matteo Arnaldi
26-Year-Old Tanked Set After Meltdown
Russian tennis player Andrey Rublev has admitted to tanking a set at the French Open after suffering a straight-set defeat to Matteo Arnaldi. Rublev, ranked 26th in the world, lost 6-7 (2), 2-6 to the Italian qualifier.
After the match, Rublev said he "melted down" during the second set and decided to tank the third in protest. "I lost my focus and started to make a lot of mistakes," Rublev said. "I wasn't playing well, and I was frustrated. So I decided to tank the third set."
Rublev's admission has drawn criticism from some quarters, with some arguing that it sets a bad example for young players. However, others have defended Rublev, saying that he is simply being honest about the pressures he faces as a professional athlete.
